HighChem to Exhibit at EcoPro 2021: Showcasing the Future of Biodegradable Plastics with Model Room Display

HighChem Company Limited (Headquarters: Minato-Minato-ku, Tokyo President and CEO: Ushio Taka hereinafter referred to as HighChem) will be exhibiting at EcoPro 2021, which will be held at Tokyo Big Sight from Wednesday, December 8th to Friday, December 10th.

At the upcoming EcoPro 2021, HighChem will focus on environmental initiatives like 'Plastic-Free' movements and 'Sustainable Fashion.' The exhibition will prominently feature products made from PLA (Polylactic Acid), derived from corn, and PHBV, a polymer that biodegrades even in marine environments. The sustainable model room will include living, dining, bedroom, and bathroom spaces outfitted with biodegradable plastic items such as cups and cutlery, as well as home textiles like bed covers and cushions made from their proprietary PLA fibers. Additionally, the exhibit will display a range of apparel products crafted using Japan's traditional textile techniques, showcasing the luxurious quality of sustainable PLA fibers. This presentation highlights HighChem's commitment to integrating eco-friendly materials into everyday life and advancing the shift towards sustainable consumer products.

A "model room" will appear at the exhibition venue to represent a future biodegradable plastic replace existing plastics.

Main exhibits

Apparel products (resin used: PLA, etc.)

HighChem was working on developing PLA fibers, but was struggling with development due to various problems in the processing and dyeing processes when producing fabric. To address these issues, we applied traditional Japanese textile technology to create sustainable and high-quality PLA fibers. Several apparel products will also be on display on the day.

Face powder (resin used: PHBV)

Microscopic plastic particles used as a base material for makeup products. When this plastic flows out of the bathroom, it passes through sewage treatment filters and ends up in rivers and oceans. Nikko Rica Co., Ltd. and our company have entered into a strategic business alliance to develop cosmetic applications for PHBV resin products, and use Nikko Rica's technological capabilities to improve the functionality of the PHBV materials that HighChem imports from China for cosmetic applications. At this exhibition, we will be exhibiting makeup products made using PHBV, which is biodegradable in the ocean, as an alternative to plastic. (Courtesy of Nikko Rica Co., Ltd.)

Cutlery, makeup supplies (resin used: PHBV)

We will exhibit cutlery and makeup products made from PHBV, which is biodegradable in the ocean. The raw material is biomass resin derived from plants such as corn and cassava.
