TOKYO, Japan – HighChem Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President & CEO: Ushio Taka), a global chemical trading and manufacturing company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sarawak Petchem Sdn. Bhd., a state-owned enterprise of Sarawak, Malaysia. The ceremony took place on May 13 at the Hydrogen Economy Forum in Sarawak, with representatives from the Sarawak State Government in attendance.
Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Chemical Production — The partnership will leverage HighChem's proprietary SEG® (Syngas to Ethylene Glycol) technology to develop and construct a production facility in Bintulu Petrochemical Industrial Park, Sarawak. The initial phase will utilize natural gas-derived syngas for ethylene glycol production, with plans to gradually transition to green hydrogen and biomass-derived CO2 as feedstock, advancing towards the production of "Green Ethylene Glycol." This collaboration aligns with Sarawak's sustainability goals and accelerates the global implementation of HighChem's green chemical technologies, including Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU).
Sarawak: A Strategic Hub for Sustainable Development
Sarawak, Malaysia's largest natural gas producer, operates hydroelectric power plants with a combined capacity of approximately 3.5GW. The state has implemented a comprehensive gas roadmap to attract global downstream investments and is actively developing sustainable initiatives, including: 【Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects / Green hydrogen production utilizing hydroelectric resources / Biomass power generation】 The region has already attracted significant international investment, exemplified by Sarawak Petchem's recent launch of a 1.75-million-ton methanol plant.
HighChem's Leadership in Green Chemical Technology
HighChem brings substantial expertise to this partnership, with a proven track record in C1 technology and SEG® process implementation: 【23 technology licenses granted globally / Combined production capacity of 10 million tons per year / Established catalyst manufacturing capabilities / Extensive experience in commercial-scale operations】 "This partnership represents a significant step forward in sustainable chemical production," said Ushio Taka, President & CEO of HighChem. "By combining our proven technology with Sarawak's natural resources and commitment to sustainability, we're creating a model for the future of green chemical manufacturing."
